You won't want to miss this special performance at the River Roo. Right on the river in Ellenton, it's as Floridian as it gets, with grouper on the plates and gators in the marina. Charlie will be fronting the Big Scene band, with Tom Bell on acoustic guitar and Kevin Wilder on keyboards. He'll be playing the slide guitar, the lap steel and all kinds of other steampunk gadgetry. Charlie's heading off next week on a tour of Spain and Switzerland, so this will be the last local CMB show until late July.

Now that the Swigwam has converted to a Hooters-inspired format, getting rid of the "old junk" on the walls and on the stage, the Ka-Tiki is the only true Old Florida Beach Bar left on the south beaches! We always have a great time here, and several musical buddies always show up to sit in. Please come out and party with us!

On Sunday, we'll take part in the International Blues Challenge at the Springs Theater (8029 N Nebraska Ave, Tampa). This is the Suncoast Blues Society's premier yearly event for original blues! 8 top local bands will be playing original material, vying for a slot at the national championship in Memphis. The show starts at 3pm, and Charlie and the boys go on around 7pm. Kevin Wilder and Wilder joins us on keys for an all-original set including a couple of slidefests from the new CD.

We are our brother’s keepers and to prove it there is a benefit for our brother Tim Heading who has been sick for the last month. He is getting better but he spent many days in the hospital and hasn’t been well enough to work. Now that the election is over it is time to put the red state blue state behind us and let’s have a red, white, and blue country and work together to solve the immense problems that we will face in this century.

Now let's see if Obama can unite a country in serious fiscal trouble.

America faces several serious fiscal challenges. Deficits are running rampant, the economy has weakened, Social Security is unsound and Medicare health care spending is growing and will continue to put immense pressure on the budget. Borrowing by the federal government will reach unsustainable levels soon. The tax policy will need a major overhaul and Obama and Congress will have to take concrete steps to confront these challenges or America will fall into a financial abyss that will make the great depression look like the Clinton era good times.

The Nelms / Chavers Band

Josh Nelms & Mike Chavers have been playing around the Tampa Bay area for the last 15 years. They have performed & recorded with some of the best blues men from the area like Sarasota Slim, Jimmy Grizwald, Charlie Morris, T C Carr, Damon Fowler and many more.

Mike is originally from Niagara Falls, NY. He started traveling with tour bands in the early 70’s and moved to N.Y. City in 1976 and started writing and performing in the New York original showcase circuit.

Mike’s band named Sweetwater was playing at The Apollo Theater, The Other End, and Kenny’s Castaway, and the Bottom Line. Mike started working with Jimmy Norman who wrote Time is On My Side – The Rolling Stones. Mike also hooked up With Carl Gardner the founder of the Coasters and worked with them for 6 years. After moving to St Petersburg Mike met Joey Dee – “The Peppermint Twist” guy and toured with Joey for 2 years.

Josh is a Florida Cracker born right here in Plant City. Josh is a fiery guitarist and will shred and barbeque the music and serve it up with a special sauce that will delight everyone.

Spoons AKA Brent Winner is holding down the beat playing the drums and singing the blues.

The band plays a unique mix of blues, soul and roots music. In the bands show you can hear anything from Louie Jordan, Muddy Water, & Johnny Cash to Louie Prima, Wilson Pickett & The Rolling Stones.

While on vacation I am reading a few books that have just come out in the last few months so here is my review of this read.

Swim Against the Current – Even a dead fish can go with the flow
Jim Hightower

An entertaining introduction to what ails the Nation. Neo- Con politics & Corporate Greed followed by an apathetic citizenry who cries what can we do has gotten us to our current state.

If you are just waking up to what the Neo-Cons are doing politically and Corporate Globalization is doing economically & environmentally to this country, this book will be an informative look at what some people are doing to buck the system. It also has an excellent list of organizations that will help you get involved if you should so choose.

If you are already a populist and active in the socio, economic, political arena this is just preaching to the choir but a good sermon is always refreshing nonetheless.

Peace and Liberty through intelligence, strength, and integrity.

Lt. Ehren Watada in June 2006 denounced this illegal occupation of Iraq and refused to deploy. He was tried for 2 specifications Conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman (for statements made in speeches and interviews- Article 133) and 1 specification Missing Movement (for refusing to deploy to Iraq on June 22 2006 – Article 87). He could have been sentenced to up to 6 years in prison.

I am writing to say this is how Americans should stand up and be counted. Lt Watada said he is not a conscientious objector because he is not opposed to all wars as a matter of principle. He is no coward either because he offered to serve in Afghanistan. Lt. Ehren Watada is a man of principle and he indeed took an oath when he enlisted into the United States Army. This is the oath he took.

I Ehren Watada, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear the faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President to the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Lt. Watada believes as I do that the war that lead to the occupation of Iraq has violated the Constitution and War Powers Act which limits the president in his role as Commander in Chief from using the armed forces in any way he sees fit. It also violates the UN Charter, the Geneva Conventions, and the Nuremberg Principles which bar wars of aggression. It is therefore his duty to disobey the orders to occupy Iraq.

The Congress has failed our country and should pay the price during the next election for not stopping this cabal of cretins in the executive branch for leading us into the ruination of our armed services, our reputation in world opinion and the pillaging of our treasury to the war profiteers.

Our last defense against this madness may be the military. Over 10,000 soldiers have deserted since the Iraq invasion. Now the administration rattles their sabers at Iran and it is said that before his term is over that Bush will attack Iran. Top military commanders have said that this will not happen on their watch. I hope that they stick to their word and fulfill their oath to defend the constitution and disobey any illegal acts of aggression.

I urge all the men at arms to disobey illegal and immoral orders and take the consequences do not desert but have the courage to stand up and go to trial and let this country hear why this war is illegal. You will be supported by many of us Americans.

Maybe then some more of our lawmakers would have the courage to do what is right and end the occupation and repudiate what this present administration has done to our constitution and freedom.
